It was only an open secret, and had been for many months already. But Paris Saint-Germain has finally made it official, announcing on Tuesday the departure of Mauricio Pochettino from his post as coach of the red and blue club. An outcome which seemed inevitable and reinforced by the recent arrival of Luis Campos as sports adviser to the reigning French champion, after the end of the adventure for the ex-sports director Leonardo.
“Paris Saint-Germain confirms that it has put an end to its collaboration with Mauricio Pochettino. The Argentinian coach and his staff joined the capital club in January 2021. Former captain of the Rouge et Bleu, he played 84 matches on the Parisian bench with a record of 55 wins, 15 draws and 14 losses in all competitions. Under his leadership, Paris Saint-Germain won the 2020 Champions Trophy, the 2021 Coupe de France as well as the 10th French championship title in its history, last April. The club would like to thank Mauricio Pochettino and his staff for their work and wish them the best for the future”specifies the press release published by Paris SG for the occasion.

Pochettino, a failure to forget
The 50-year-old Argentinian technician thus leaves the Parc des Princes only a year and a half after his arrival, on January 2, 2021. If his adventure had started with a success against OM (2-1) at the 2020 Champions Trophy (at postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic), his first six months will remain disappointing. Despite a victory in the Coupe de France at the expense of AS Monaco (2-0), Mauricio Pochettino saw Christophe Galtier and LOSC Lille take the lead in Ligue 1, while he came up against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The past season, in 2021-2022, PSG has certainly recovered its throne in the French championship, but, despite the XXL transfer window carried out by the Parisian management (Messi, Ramos, Donnarumma, Hakimi, Wijnaldum), PSG has stopped in the round of 16 on the European scene, the fault, too, of a very great Karim Benzema with Real Madrid. Not to mention the failures in the Coupe de France (elimination in the round of 16 against OGC Nice), as well as during the 2021 Champions Trophy (0-1 against LOSC).
Galtier to (finally) make the stars shine?
More than the difficulty of triumphing in competitions, it is especially in the game that Mauricio Pochettino has failed. Never, or too rarely, has the former Tottenham coach been able to turn his quality squad into a well-oiled machine, regularly putting on a disappointing show for his supporters. They can be reassured, the road to their club and that of Pochettino are now separate. Luis Campos and Nasser-Al-Khelaïfi have in any case decided to bet on Christophe Galtier to take control of this red and blue group. It’s up to the former coach of ASSE, LOSC and OGC Nice to put Paris back on the right track.
